Concepts for Comping: Lesson 9

The 4th and final Key Scheme that we're going to drill is Cyclical, that is, around the Key Circle (Cycle of 4ths). This one is a little more complicated. When drilling II-V-I's around the Key Circle, alternate with respect to Open-to-Close and Close-to-Open. For instance:

  • Key of C: D-7(open) – G7(close) – Cmaj7(open) – C6(open)

  • Key of F: G-7(close) – C7(open) – Fmaj7(close) – F6(close)

  • Key of Bb: C-7(open) – F7(close) – Bbmaj7(open) – Bb6(open)

  • Key of Eb: F-7(close) – Bb7(open) – Ebmaj7(close) – Eb6(close)

...and so on.

Free Downloads!

As I explained in an email sent out to my list 3 weeks ago, I've switched the email management platform I'm using.

  • Are you on my list? Sign up HERE!

The old platform (Mad Mimi) that I've been using since I started this business (see The Fun Has Not Yet Gone Away) has gone away. After some trial-&-error I'm now using FloDesk.

Anyway, I offered my list several free lesson downloads as a way to test FloDesk in order to decide whether or not to commit to it. Those downloads are still available but will go away by the end of the month. I’ve decided to offer them through this blog as well. Here are the options, you may pick any or all of them.

FYI: You do not have to be on my list to download any of these free lessons; they are available to anyone who wants them. However, IF you download, you will be on the list!

Firstly, the 5-Lesson Foundational Series. Yes, I give it away for free anyway - every newsletter and every blog. As the name implies, it's the foundation on which my entire method is built. Almost every lesson presupposes it. Get it HERE.

As kind of a quick preview of the upcoming launch of Unit 7: 9th Chords:

Speaking of the Blues, here is a 4-lesson series; “Blues Plus.” The 4 lessons are:

1) The Basic 12-Bar Form with Variations

2) Turnarounds & the Tritone Substitution

3) The Walkdown, The Walkup & Stormy Monday

4) Bop Blues

“Modal Distinctives” is 6-lesson series that accesses the 7 modes of the major scale plus the Harmonic Minor Scale from a scale you probably already know; the Minor Pentatonic. A PDF containing: 36 pages, 6 lessons, 65 fretboard diagrams and other graphics, 6 video links, 28 links to additional lessons, song examples, and more!

Take your pick, or pick them all! That's a total of 17 lessons - NO CHARGE!

Tune of the Month

From my "Channeling Harold" CD, "Alone Together" was written in 1932 and like many jazz standards was originally written for a Broadway musical. I was introduced to the song by Alone Together - the duo record by Jim Hall and Ron Carter recorded in 1972 live at the Playboy Club in New York. And of course, this tune was covered several times during my studies with John Elliott.

This recording features Rich VanSant on Hammond B3 and Ian Sikora on drums.

How About 5 FREE Lessons?

The 5-Lesson Foundational Series teaches the Circle of Keys as an organizational mechanism by which you ensure that whatever you learn is drilled in every key in all possible positions. It also gives you a method to find any note, anywhere, without memorizing note names on every string. That is a beautiful thing!

Almost every lesson I teach presupposes it.

You can download the 5-Lesson Foundational Series right here for free (a $39 value) with no further obligation or commitment.
