Concepts for Comping: Lesson 12
We're back to the Concepts for Comping lesson series after taking a break in December for the launch of Unit 7: 9th Chords (more on that below).
We're doing some tunes to demonstrate how these open and close-voiced 7th chords (also known as, “Shell Voicings”) are applied.
This months' song is “Autumn Leaves.”
Two things to introduce here:
When II-V-I is in a minor key, the II chord is half-diminished.
Since we are omitting the 5th from the chords, F#-7(b5) is the same thing as F#-7.

9th Chords Launch is Over!
From my end, this was one of the smoothest launches ever; I had ZERO issues. No one contacted me with a failed download, a lost file, payment that didn't go through, trouble navigating the process, etc. That's pretty amazing. There's almost always some problems with a launch like this, but this one went off without a hitch.
That includes no problems with FloDesk, the new email management platform I switched to just prior to this launch. I wrote about that situation in List Management.
Anyway, thanks much to everyone who purchased! Your purchase helps me to continue putting in the time and effort it takes to keep MasterGuitarSchool.com going.
The Unit 7: 9th Chords sales page is now up - including the link to the Site Member Discount.
Even if you missed out on this launch, the sales page has a ton of content that’s available to anyone. Check it out.
These launches go out to Site Members only; that's one of the many benefits of being a Site Member. If you want more info on Site Membership, go to Why Become a Site Member.
Speaking of which, to those who purchased during the launch last month, don't forget your bonus thank-you gift; a free 30-minute consult - just you and me! There's no expiration date on this; redeem it at any time.
If you commit to work through my guitar method, I commit to help guide you through it.
Blogs Published Since Last Newsletter
The blogs relating to the 9th Chords launch will not be listed other than the first one.
Jimi’s Triads: Jimi Hendrix had a very distinctive style when it came to rhythm guitar playing. One of the things he did was play rhythmic figures based on triad shapes.
Republished: Dorian 4th-Clusters: These 4th clusters have become an integral part of my chord soloing. Each chord will have 4 notes and be a stack of 4ths. That’s why I say that these chords are, “Fourthy.”
Every Guitar Has A Story: The latest episode from Mark Valentine's Blog, Every Guitar Has A Story, features one of my guitars, a Martin MC28.
Original, Cover or Tribute? At what point does a band become a tribute to itself?

Tune of the Month
This is a live recording from 8/3/91 at The Tuba in Kansas City - a club long gone. And yes, the performance fell apart a little at the end! That's show biz.
This band was the backing band for Kevin Mahogany, who I worked with for several years. I talk about my time with Kevin in, Remembering Kevin Mahogany.
The tune was written by the bass player, Bob Blount. The band was:
Jay EuDaly: Guitar.
Chip Lewis: Drums.
Bob Blount: Bass.
Phil Brenner: Sax.
Jack Mulligan: Keys.
